Platelet Rich Fibrin [prf]
Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) – Chestermere
Our blood contains fibrin platelets, white blood cells and other elements that can improve healing, and decrease infection after medical procedures. PRF has been used by medical doctors for several years and with the improvement of technology dentists are now incorporating the technology into their offices.
Reasons for PRF
Decrease Infection – By utilizing white blood cells to the area of surgery the risk of having infection after a tooth extraction or placement of dental implant can be decreased.
Improved Healing – By utilizing blood platelets; growth factors are released that result in faster healing of the surgical site. Blood platelets have several functions including clot formations and the release of growth factors that can assist with recovery after surgery. In addition the white blood cells help fight against infection.
What does the procedure Require?
The dentist will first consult the patient on whether they are a candidate or not. The dentist will withdraw a small amount of blood from the patient.
The sample is then placed in a centrifuge that separates the various components of blood mainly the plasma, fibrin, and platelets from the red blood cells. These components will then be placed at the site of surgery.
